SUMMARY:
This is an entry-level transportation position working outdoors in industrial settings year-round. The position entails a considerable amount of walking and climbing on and off heavy equipment. It also requires the ability to perform strenuous work, such as operating manual track switches, coupling air hoses, and setting and releasing hand brakes on railroad cars. Successful candidates are in a probationary status for their first 90 days of employment, during which time they will participate in a train service training program. Thereafter, once they have gained additional actual work experience, (typically after 8 months employment), new train service employees are expected to successfully complete a two-week training program covering remote control locomotive operations. Eventually, train service employees are the source of supply to become locomotive engineers through the company's Locomotive Engineer Training Program. Train service employees typically work from an "extra board" at Gary, IN or Joliet, IL, where most job assignments in train service are based and will be required to provide their own transportation. "Extra board" employees are "on call" 24 hours a day, 6 days a week.
