Fairfield Southern Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham Southern Company, is a contract carrier operating within US Steel’s Fairfield Works at Fairfield, AL. Fairfield Works is an integrated steel mill producing a variety of flat rolled steel coils and a tubular division producing oil country and line pipe. FS also provides loading and delivery service for U. S. Steel Mining Company, LLC, a coal mine producing in excess of 2,000,000 net tons per year. Fairfield Southern owns no equipment and operates only on tracks owned by customers they serve.

Fairfield Southern receives blast furnace raw materials and semi-finished steel products from BSRR, which they deliver to the mill location that needs the material. Fairfield Southern also gathers scrap and other production by-products and distributes them for recycling or disposal. Fairfield Southern has proven to be a cost effective and critical element of steel making and finishing at US Steel Fairfield Works.
