Duquesne Wharf's capacity
is integrated into and matched by
Union Railroad's efficient rail service.

At Duquesne Wharf, Union Railroad can spot over 200 empty cars at one time and simultaneously handle up to six 70-car loaded trains destined for Union Railroad sites and/or interchange points. While each train is loaded by remote control, Union Railroad has a certified locomotive engineer on board to ensure safe and timely loading of each train.

Meeting the Market:
Coal Blending at Duquesne Wharf

While offering efficient, cost-effective river-to-rail transfer and transport of coal, Duquesne Wharf also provides coal producers with a competitive edge through optional on-site coal blending.

This unique capability, enhanced by Duquesne Wharf's dual unloading system, helps coal producers to bid competitively and achieve desired coal specifications. At Duquesne Wharf, coal blending options include:

  • Simultaneous Loading: Duquesne Wharf maximizes its dual loading system by using the bucket unloader and equilibrium crane to simultaneously load two types/grades of coal into railcars.

  • Layer Loading: Duquesne Wharf loads one coal into railcars, and "tops off" with a second type or grade of coal.

  • Split Loading: A unit train is partially loaded at the mine, and topped off at Duquesne Wharf with coal from barges.
