Coal:

Duquesne Wharf: Industry's Partner in River-to-Rail Transport.

Duquesne Wharf's capabilities and services meet not only the needs of coal customers but also suppliers serving the steel industry, and other industrial customers along the Great Lakes and throughout northeastern United States and Canada.

As the largest bulk material crane in the Pittsburgh region, Duquesne Wharf's equilibrium crane transfers bulk commodities from barge to rail at a rate of 750 NTPH, or 6000 NT per shift. The equilibrium crane's patented parallelogram design keeps the crane in near balance through its full working range, enabling it to perform extended and repetitive cycling of large loads. Versatile and powerful, the equilibrium crane is built for unloading coal, coke breeze, iron ore, pig iron, hot-briquetted iron, and other steel making raw materials and bulk commodities such as salt, sand, and aggregates used by municipalities and industry.

On a daily basis, Duquesne Wharf transfers raw materials and bulk commodities from barge to rail for delivery to industrial plants on B&LE, or to multiple interchange points with other railroads. Tapping Union Railroad's established network of rail lines, Duquesne Wharf also transfers raw materials from barge to rail for direct delivery to steel facilities throughout the Monongahela Valley.
