Although WGN operates primarily between Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama, on the Black Warrior Tombigbee River System and the Tenn-Tom Waterway between Iuka, Mississippi, and Mobile, WGN has the ability to interchange barges with all the major inland waterway carriers at Mobile, New Orleans and/or Iuka, Mississippi, allowing it to provide customer service throughout the Inland Waterway System. WGN's fleet of 22 towboats and 240 barges provides for an annual capacity of approximately 9 million tons of products. Along the Black Warrior Tombigbee System, WGN loads its barges with export coal for Drummond Coal and U. S. Steel Mining Company, LLC; and domestic coal for Alabama Power Company. Additionally, WGN provides barge transportation for several major steel manufacturers, i.e., U.S. Steel, Tuscaloosa Steel, ACIPCO, Franco Steel, Cargill Ferrous, and other steel importers. WGN's Port Birmingham Terminal allows our customers to barge their bulk and steel products to be discharged direct to truck and rail or discharged into open and/or covered storage for subsequent movement via truck and rail. Along the Tenn-Tom Waterway, WGN loads its barges with wood chips for Weyerhaeuser Company and transports the chips to Mobile for discharge into storage at Mobile Bay Wood Chip Center. Mobile Bay Wood Chip Center serves Weyerhaeuser Company, Southeast Wood Fiber Company and Mannington Wood Floors through handling their respective wood chips into storage and subsequently loading the chips onboard specialized vessels destined for Japan. |
