Technological innovations in America's railroads

Railroading began in 1804 when Richard Trevithick, an Englishman, invented the very first locomotive-driven train. At first the train was used as an amusement ride. Now we know that rail transportation is one of the most popular modes of transportation, used by more than a million people a day around the world.

Current Realities

Today, passenger service is provided by Amtrak, a state-owned company that serves all states in continental America except Wyoming and South Dakota, where there is no passenger traffic. The busiest route is the Boston to Washington line through Philadelphia and New York.

In addition to this corporation, there is an isolated road in Alaska and a narrow-gauge line in Hawaii.

Freight transportation is handled by private companies in various categories: first class, regional, line local operators, and S&T carriers. The railroads currently carry 40% of all freight.
